What's in my travel bag?!

Updated: Dec 12, 2018

As a travel photographer, it's key to being a "minimalist" as your gear can get REALLY, REALLY HEAVY. You don't want to be the one aching and screaming because your back hurts - take it from me, been there and have done that way too many times.

Take a look at the photo on the right, where I just so happened to cram every piece of equipment I ever owned into every compartment made known to man, shortly before making a horrendous and freezing 2.5 mile hike to the abandoned plane site in Vik, Iceland.

Today, I'd like to take you through a somewhat "minimal" setup geared towards RUN&GUN film-making.

I say "somewhat' because if you asked any photographer, they'd need 10 lenses, 20 batteries, 3 stabilizers and 3 tripods. You get where I am going with this right?

SO, WHAT'S THE BAG, YOU ASK?

ATLASPACKS - ADVENTURE PACK, MSRP $385.00 USD

Size: 35 liters

Weight: 6.7 lbs

This bag is built for the camera and travel enthusiast in mind. I absolutely LOVE it. First of all, it's lightweight and ergonomically one of the best designs in the game. Not to mention, it is rated to withstand over 900 lbs of force (that's a lot of gear and a lot of travel!)

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION, SO WHAT'S IN THE BAG?

I promise I was getting there.

As you can see, I can easily fit the following items:

  1. DJI Mavic PRO 2 w/ Controller

  2. Fujifilm XT3 w/ 16-55MM Zoom Lens

  3. DJI Osmo Mobile 2 Phone Stabilizer

  4. Peak Designs Camera Strap

  5. Rode Professional Microphone

  6. DJI Ronin-S Camera Stabilizer

So, as I mentioned above, this is me being "minimal" but allowing myself to have just enough tools to be able to produce a nice cinematic short film during my travels. In the bag, we are covering ground and air while providing stabilization for quick RUN&GUN Operations.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE CAMERA EQUIPMENT!!!

No patience! I was getting there! (PS, it's okay, I would be excited too.)

1) DJI Mavic 2 PRO, MSRP: $1499.99 USD

Undoubtedly is one of my most favorite tools to travel with. The sky used to be the limit as technology advances these days, we are able to even venture further beyond that! Never would I have thought that I would be able to capture blockbuster movie angles from the palm of my own hands, at a fraction of the price!

AERIAL FOOTAGE = PRODUCTION VALUE

2) FUJIFILM XT3 MIRRORLESS CAMERA WITH 16-55MM XF LENS, MSRP $2500.00 USD

Now, I am not going to lie. I absolutely love this camera - for many reasons. It's lightweight, aesthetically appealing and blows the specs out of the water compared to other competitors.

What's important to me when traveling is that I have a camera that can do both photo and video because who wants to lug around 2 devices?

26.1 Megapixels

Shoots 4k60 video

Shoots HD120p video (for slow motion juiciness)

3) DJI OSMO MOBILE 2, MSRP $120.00 USD

So, this right here is my other secret weapon. It's a lightweight stabilizer for your phone!

When you want to spice up your Instagram videos and take it up a notch, this is what you use. I use this to record videos for my Instagram stories as a lot of folks neglect story appeal. Stories can be sexy and cinematic too!

Active Track

Motion Lapse

Zoom Control

DJI App

4) PEAK DESIGNS CAMERA STRAP, MSRP $65.00 USD

This thing is aesthetically appealing, lightweight and VERY functional. What I hate about conventional camera straps is that I have to wiggle the strap in and out to detach it from the camera.

Not here, not anymore - peak designs have quick-connectors that allow you to remove the strap in less than 2 seconds. Think about that time when a Dolphin is about to jump out of the ocean and you're stuck fiddling with your camera strap and unable to mount it to your gimbal because of your last decade tech.

Quick Connects + Quick Adjust

5) RODE VIDEOMIC PRO, MSRP $260.00 USD

Rode is becoming a household name for affordable, professional audio equipment.

This bad boy right here is one of the best in the game. I take this around for documentaries and recording various soundscapes throughout my travels.

Compact and Lightweight

Integrated Foam Windscreen

Two Step High Pass Filter

Three Position Level Control

6) DJI RONIN-S STABILIZER, MSRP $749.00 USD

The other secret weapon to cinematic film-making.

We are truly blessed to live in a world these days where you can have an entire Hollywood setup all in your backpack.

I take this almost everywhere I go. Why, because everything deserves to be cinematic.

3.6 kg Tested Payload Capacity

Fine Focus Control

Automated Smart Features

3 Axis Stabilization

THE END, FOR NOW

I hope you guys enjoyed seeing what I carry around throughout my adventures. Travel film-making is huge and I am happy to see how much more affordable it has become. Technology is one of the greatest gifts to humans - let's never take that fore-granted.
